“ In the Roman Rite, the preface opens with the following:
V. The Lord be with you. R. And with your spirit.
V. Lift up your hearts. R. We lift them up to the Lord.
V. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. R. It is right and just.”58
Then the priest continues: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks...
Meaning, we should thank God for the meal.
God’s concluding statement:
“Tantum Ergo is the last two stanzas from the Eucharistic Hymn (Pange Lingua) composed by St. Thomas Aquinas and is used at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The response and the prayer at the end is a later addition used at Benediction.” 59
